Pupils

School starts in the morning between 8-8.30 and the last lesson is usually at about 17.00.

Subjects Icelandic students have to take are: Foreign languages (English, Danish and a third language), mathematics, natural science (chemistry, physics, biology), history, sociology, physical education and life skills.

We have 10 years of compulsory education in primary school and secondary school which starts at 16 most often takes 4 years.

There are several complimentary activities such as drama club, sports, music, a choir, film studies etc. Students can also take part in voluntary work for the Red Cross and get credits for that.

It is expected that students spend 2-3 hours per day on homework.

Icelandic students like to spend their free time on the same sort of activities in other countries but in addition most of them have a job.

Marks are given out of ten (1-10, where 1 is the lowest).

Job prospects aren't really great at the moment except in supermarkets or kiosks.  You really need to get further education for a decent job.

The summer vacation in secondary school is 3 months where most students have a job. Christmas vacation is about 2 or 3 weeks and Easter vacation about 2 weeks. Midterm breaks are short only about 4 or 5 days.

Icelandic children start school at the age of 6 and they stay in primary school until they are 16.
